Notes from the Chair:

Have a great season.

NFHS enacted a rule several years ago that stated "the bow of the stick may not exceed 25mm and must have a permanently affixed label."

In 2007, they extended the deadline to 2009.
Note: most sticks that exceed 25mm are used in higher levels of play and mostly in           Europe.

We have just been informed by NFHS that ALL FIELD HOCKEY STICKS, USED AT THE VARSITY LEVEL, MUST BE IN COMPLIANCE AND MUST HAVE A PERMANENT LABEL ON THE STICK .

The initial thought throughout the country was that older sticks would be grand-fathered.
This new clarification shows that is not the case.

Sticks that were manufactured after 2007 should have labels and be in compliance.
The label or imprint will be on the stick.

The problem is sticks that are older or sticks that meet the bow restriction but do not have a permanent label.
(think of the number of sticks through out the country/world that do not have a label!! )

Manufacturers and vendors such as Dita, Longstreth, Cranberry, Penn Monto etc, have stated that they will send labels to people who have sticks that meet the criteria, purchased prior to the "bow date".

What do you have to do?

If your athletes have their own sticks, they or their parents must get a label.
If your school purchased the sticks, you or your AD must contact the manufacturer or vendor and get the labels.
Suggestion:  if your school is making the contact, get labels for ALL of your sticks, not just Varsity, as the rule will eventually apply to all levels.

What happens if a stick does not have the label?

Officials will be instructed not to allow a stick to be used at the Varsity level if it does not meet the criteria and have a permanently affixed label.

What if stick obviously meets the 25mm bow but does not have a label?

Officials will be instructed not to allow a stick to be used at the Varsity level if it does not meet the criteria and have a permanently affixed label.
